Reconciliation Gathering at the Ministry Centre

On April 29, 2008 we were among more than two thousand Australians getting together to share in an event about reconciliation, organised by Get-Up.

The aim was to share our stories, thoughts and hopes about reconciliation and Indigenous affairs, and to build relationships, trust and discussion.

The goal was simple but ambitious and extremely important. As Fred Chaney of Reconciliation Australia says, “Respectful partnerships underpin every example of success we have at our disposal locally and around the world – this is what reconciliation is all about”.

No government or Prime Minister alone can achieve reconciliation and Indigenous justice. It takes a nation – Indigenous and non-Indigenous working together. It takes us all reaching out to our friends, and making new ones. It takes not just a change of policy but also a change of culture. That’s why we met - because policy change may come from the desk of the Prime Minister, but cultural change comes from the kitchen tables of families and friends.

Since the Apology, the Get-Up organisation has recorded new words to the Paul Kelly song "From little things BIG things grow” and we expressed our hope for true reconciliation through the singing together of this song.

Johnny Huckle is a Wirradjuri man living in Charnwood who has published three albums of songs, including Spirit Man.

According to the critics, Johnny “has had more hits on the radio than Anthony Mundine does in the boxing ring”.

He has performed at music festivals in Australia and overseas.

One comment made about him says that:

“His magic is drawn from his own life experience as a son, father, husband, and friend. As a child who suffered illness and pain, experienced violence, racial discrimination, and as a man healing himself from the past he is an inspiration as he promotes healing to others through his wonderful music.”
